Musing Mary

Tintoretto, Musing Mary, 1582-1586, Venice, Scuola Grande di San Rocco

Tintoretto's Musing Mary is one of two splendid canvases kept in the earthly room of the Scuola Grande di San Rocco, which present two female figures in the solitude of a very modern twilight landscape. Traditionally identified as the Magdalene and Maria Egiziaca, they actually represent the same woman, Maria, to whom the first room is dedicated, which meditates on past and future events. Looking at the two works at the same time, one almost has the impression that Tintoretto painted the same scene from two different points of view, in front and behind.
