A Refined Pictorial Tribute to the Timeless Don Quixote

Ciro Palumbo, Scelgo Quella Gran Luce, 2023, Oil on canvas, 140 × 160 cm | Courtesy Fondazione Giorgio e Armanda Marchesani / Ciro Palumbo

Through the sophisticated paintings of Ciro Palumbo (Zurich, 1965), the exhibition curated by Anna Caterina Bellati for the Giorgio and Armanda Marchesani Foundation pays homage to the famous Don Quixote of La Mancha (El Ingenioso Hidalgo Don Quijote de la Mancha), the grandiose Spanish novel by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra in which the characters escape even their author. This characteristic interpretative ambiguity emerges from the works of the Swiss painter transfigured in the excited strokes that emerge from the paper, canvas or plaster trying to convey ideas and intuitions in constant struggle against time. In an attempt to decipher the thousand aspects of the monumental classic of world literature, Palumbo deals with the contents of each canvas, preparatory drawing, sculpture, granting much more space and expressive variables to passion and fate than has ever happened to him previously, managing to give this corpus of works a particular attitude towards comparison with others, with the aim of fully grasping their soul to impersonate "that" knight as much as possible.
